How to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours
Divide the minutes by 60, then add the whole hours. For 7 hours 45 minutes: 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. Clock time uses 60 minutes per hour, so writing 7.45 would describe a different duration.

How to convert decimal hours back to minutes
Multiply decimal hours by 60 to find total minutes. For 8.25 hours: 8.25 × 60 = 495 minutes, or 8 hours 15 minutes. The reverse converter rounds to the nearest whole minute and carries 60 minutes into the next hour.
Why is 7.30 hours different from 7 hours 30 minutes?
The decimal .30 is three-tenths of an hour: .30 × 60 = 18 minutes. Seven hours and 30 minutes is 7.50 decimal hours. When copying a timecard, check whether its columns show hours:minutes or decimal hours.
Should I round each shift before estimating pay?
For a personal estimate, retain the minutes and apply your rate to the unrounded duration. For example, 7h 20m at $18/hour is 440 ÷ 60 × 18 = $132.00. Multiplying the rounded 7.33 by $18 instead produces $131.94. Your employer’s official timekeeping rules are a separate matter.
